More Information on Cost-Savings for Labs, Rx, and Supplements

Here is some information about how to navigate costs associated with your plan of care. Please review your options in preparation for your appointment(s)! There are lots of ways we can play this game and it helps to be prepared 🙂

Lab Testing

Insurance: if you have a low-deductible plan or you have already met your deductible (or close) this year, this may be a great option for you. This situation is becoming more and more rare!

Insurance with a high-deductible or no insurance: if you are not insured or have not yet met your high-deductible (and don’t expect to this year), even if your insurance contracts with the lab, the order can be very expensive as all of the cost will count toward your deductible and be your immediate financial responsibility.

  • Intermountain Health has a cash option but it is still very expensive
  • I can order cash-based labs from Rupa Health, the cost is often a FRACTION of the insurance price. The cost of cash-based labs does not count toward your deductible.
  • The cheapest option is drawn through Quest. Check this site to see if there is a phlebotomy option near you. You can schedule at this website too.
  • The next option is drawn through Labcorp. Check this site to see if there is a phlebotomy option near you. You can schedule at this website too.
  • In Cache Valley, the only phlebotomy option is at Cache Valley Direct Labs and there is an additional $59 draw fee. They process through Labcorp as well.

Specialty labs like stool tests, salivary/urinary hormone tests, etc. are almost never covered by insurance. We will discuss options as the need arises.

Prescriptions and Supplements

Finding cost-effective medications also depends on what your insurance covers and your deductible (if you have insurance). Here are some other options to explore that are cash-based and can often significantly decrease cost (even with insurance if you have a high medication deductible plan). If you find a cheaper price at a different pharmacy, have the new pharmacy contact your old pharmacy to transfer your Rx. In my experience, IT IS WORTH SHOPPING AROUND REGULARLY TO SAVE $$$

  • GoodRx – download the app. Chain pharmacies (Walgreens, Smiths, Costco, CVS, etc.) will often honor these prices while smaller, local, compounding pharmacies often do not.

  • Cost Plus Drug Company – this is an online pharmacy where you can check if your Rx is part of their formulary.
  • Fullscript is an online dispensary for supplements. As a patient of Matriarch Health and Wellness, you receive a 15% discount on every order.

** HSA/FSA funds (if you have them) can be used for all labs, Rx, and supplements as well as the costs associated with your visit(s).
